Tips & Tricks to Prepare Your A/C for the Winter

With only four more months of 2021 left and half of those months considered winter, all homeowners must start taking the proper winter preparations. Kettering-Oakwood Heating & Air understands that the AC can tend to get neglected during the winter months; however, we are here to help homeowners keep their AC unit in five-star shape for when summer rolls back around in 2022.

Schedule A Furnace Tune-Up + Safety Check

To ensure your home heating and cooling system can keep up with your temperature needs throughout the winter, all homeowners need to schedule their yearly maintenance (if you haven’t already). By taking the time to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed HVAC technicians can help you save time and money in the long run. Additionally, during your scheduled appointment one of our licensed technicians can check your AC unit to verify that it is correctly covered for winter.

Check & Replace Air Filters

Because homeowners tend to neglect their AC unit during the colder months of the year, it is best to understand that the AC and furnace filters work simultaneously. Therefore, if one or the other is full of dirt and debris, it will affect your home’s electricity/gas utility bills. This is because the system is working harder than it should be to pump out clean and filtered hot air, but it is getting blocked by the full filters. The best thing you can do to avoid this is to replace both filters at the beginning of the winter, examine them frequently (about every 30 days), and change them as needed.

Cover & Clean Your A/C Unit

Another tip that homeowners should follow to get their air conditioner unit ready for the winter is to properly cover and thoroughly clean the entire AC unit. All homeowners, new and old, need to invest in an AC cover. These can be purchased from any hardware store such as ACE or Menards. On top of covering your unit, it also needs to be cleaned. When cleaning the AC unit, you want to clean out all the dust and debris from the unit that accumulated over the summer. Doing these two things will help ensure that your unit won’t be an appealing shelter for bugs and rodents that usually seek safety during the winter.

Overall, homeownership isn’t a walk in the park and should always be taken seriously. However, taking care of your home and its investments will save you time, money, and effort. Luckily, Kettering-Oakwood Heating & Air is here to assist all homeowners with any questions or concerns you may have. We want to help provide a protected and comfortable home for you and your family.
